Field Notes on Scarcity

Park Books and the Sharjah Architecture Triennial are pleased to announce the publication of Field Notes on Scarcity, edited by Tosin Oshinowo and Julie Cirelli. A significant contribution to the critical discourse surrounding resource scarcity, innovation, and design, this anthology includes 65 contributions from a diverse array of scholars, practitioners, activists, writers, and artists from the Global South, including Lesley Lokko, Yinka Shonibare, Formafantasma, Mpho Matsipa, Rahul Mehrotra, Olalekan Jeyifous, Abeer Seikaly, Ilze and Heinrich Wolff, Chitra Vishwanath, Deema Assaf, and many others.

Engaging with the nuances of scarcity across extreme climate regions, Field Notes on Scarcity addresses pressing contemporary issues ranging from climate crisis mitigation to global health pandemics, violent conflicts, forced migration, and strategies for dismantling colonialist frameworks for land use and the built environment.

Through the interdisciplinary lenses of architecture and design, the volume highlights the importance of shifting our perspectives and practices away from a reliance on permanence and abundance, advocating for a more sustainable, adaptable, and resilient approach to design.

Designed by Morcos Key and published by Park Books, the publication aligns with the second iteration of the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, The Beauty of Impermanence: An Architecture of Adaptability, curated by Tosin Oshinowo.
